How Many Times a Week Should You Go to the Gym?
It's one of the most common questions we get asked.
"How many times a week should I train?"
Some people think they need to be in the gym six days a week.
Others wonder if once is enough.
The truth?
It depends on your experience, your goals and most importantly—what you can stick to.
If You're New to the Gym, Start With Two Sessions
For beginners, we believe two strength sessions per week is the sweet spot.
Why?
Because you're going from doing very little... to doing 200% more than you're used to.
Two sessions gives your body time to recover, adapt and get stronger.
It also gives you something even more important...
The chance to build a habit.
Before worrying about training more often, ask yourself:
Can I stick to two sessions every week?
Can I avoid missing a session for a whole month?
Can I still turn up on the days I don't really feel like it?
If you can do that consistently, you'll make fantastic progress.
You've Got to Earn Three Sessions
One thing we often hear is:
"I feel like I'm waiting too long before my next strength session."
That's usually a sign you're ready to train three times per week.
At Train With Adby, we see it like this:
You've got to earn three sessions by mastering two first.
Once training twice a week becomes part of your lifestyle, adding a third session is a natural progression.
Not because you have to.
Because you want to.
More Isn't Always Better
When I was a student, I trained five or six times every week.
The funny thing is...
I didn't really know what I was doing.
Today, I train three times a week.
I'm stronger than I was back then, I enjoy training more and I actually get better results.
Why?
Because I arrive at the gym fresh.
I'm recovered.
I'm excited to train.
Then I spend the rest of my week focusing on the things that matter just as much:
Good nutrition.
Quality sleep.
Managing stress.
Spending time with my kids.
Playing football.
Getting outdoors.
Fitness should improve your life.
Not take over it.
The Biggest Mistake People Make
One of the biggest mistakes we see is people believing they need to train five or six days a week to make progress.
In reality, many people end up spinning their wheels.
They spend more time in the gym...
But neglect the big rocks.
Poor sleep.
Poor nutrition.
Too much stress.
Eventually, they burn out.
The best training plan isn't the one with the most sessions.
It's the one you can still follow six months, six years from now.
Our Recommendation
For most busy adults, we'd recommend:
2 strength sessions per week if you're just getting started.
3 strength sessions per week once you've built a consistent routine.
Daily walks where possible.
Plenty of protein.
Find ways to improve sleep.
Find ways to manage your stress levels.
Those habits will take you much further than trying to train every day.
Quality Beats Quantity
The goal isn't to spend as much time in the gym as possible.
The goal is to get the most out of the time you do spend there.
Train well.
Recover well.
Repeat.
The best training programme isn't the one that's perfect on paper.
It's the one you'll still be following this time next year.
